Friday Reflection
With colleagues who aren't as excited about using web 2.0 technologies as I am, I plan on inviting them to see how I have used it and how it is working for me once I get everything going.
For the rest of this summer, my goal is to get my classroom moodle page up and running. I am going to be doing some training for it at school in August as part of a committee I am on, so I will probably wait until then to get going on it.
This past week has really helped to build my confidence in using technology in my classroom. Although I don't believe that technology is the sole solution to reaching the Net Gen students, Teachers can definately do more to reach students by purposefully using technology in school.

Thursday Reflection
My philosophy of education is that teachers and schools need to provide a safe environment where students are engaged in learning. Teachers should be positive role models for their students and provide as many opportunties they can for students to be successful. Teachers should be approachable for students and not a classroom dictator. Sometimes I have found that the best way to help students learn is to sit back, listen to them, and find out how I can best help them to have a successful, positive future. At the same time, school should not be a series of steps that students all walk along toward graduation. Each class they take should engaging and challenging. The best way to achieve this is to have teachers who are excited about what and who they teach.
My educational philosophy hasn't really changed throughout the week, but I have learned some new tools that will help me to achieve my goals as an educator. The web 2.0 tools that I have learned this week will help me to find new avenues of engaging and challenging my students in a way that they will be able to relate to. I know that using these tools are not going to solve every problem in school and I need to be careful not to get in over my head in using them right away, but I do believe that using more technology in my classes will help to engage my students and make my life easier.
First of all, Having all of my classroom documents posted online will cut down on the extra papers I have to hand out to students who lose them and it will be easier for me to check student work from home without lugging a heavy backpack home with me every day. Web 2.0 technology will also make things easier for my students. They will be able to complete most group work without having to get together with their group at one specific time and place and it should be easier for them to ask questions and get feedback when it is all done online.
The best way that I think will help in getting these resources out to all of my students is by showing them how useful they can be. One complaint that I have heard from students using these types of tools is that it creates more work. Technology should be reducing the workload for students as long as it is used correctly. It is my goal to ensure that it does just that.
Implimentation Plan Ben Hoffman
Implimentation Plan by Ben Hoffman
After spending this past week learning about new technologies I can use in my classroom as well as the benefits that they can have, I am really excited to start implimenting them. My main goal is to start using a moodle page as a home base for students to use in my classroom. One thing that I am trying to keep in mind as I come up with these new ideas is that I need to keep a balance between getting started on all of these cool ideas I have in my head and getting in too deep. I think I will start by creating my moodle page where students can go to get resources they need like notes, worksheets, and videos they can watch. I hope to also have a place where students can add their comments and reflections on the videos they are assigned to watch on the topics in my class. I would also like to start getting my students familiar with some cool tools like wiffitti and wordle that can also help out with communication between student and teacher. If I give my students a place to easily post questions and comments on the internet through text messaging, I think that it will be easier for students to ask questions without the stress that goes along with asking questions in class.
I have several reasons for making these changes. My first reason is that most students are very familiar with using technology and would enjoy using that technology as part of school. One of the articles I we read as part of the Web 2.0 class was on 21st century skills. The article was called, "Transforming the Classroom for Collaborative Learning in the 21st Century." The author of this article explained that students are already using skills like communication and collaboration at home and by doing using technology to do these same things at school will engage them in learning. My second reason is that I think this will be a good way of keeping me organized, and my third reason for doing this is that I think it will cut down on the amount of paper I use in my class which will save my school money and help the environment.
I don't believe that implimenting these strategies will change my current practices by too much and my daily classroom activities aren't going to change all that much. Because I only have access to 1 computer during class time, the use of technology during class time will be limited to what I can SHOW students as opposed to what students can DO with technology.
Student use of these technologies will probably have to come before and after school as homework assignments. My hope is that this isn't going to add to the amount of work that students do, but take the place of the traditional worksheets and notes that students complete outside of class time
. One thing that I will have to manage myself in implimenting these new technologies is that I need to stay diligent in maintaining and organizing my class moodle site. This shouldn't add to the amount of work I have to do, but take the place of the time I usually spend correcting the more traditional homework assignments. I plan on having a moodle website up and running by the time that students arrive this next school year. This way, students will get into the routine of using it right away and won't know any different. I've tried out some of my great classroom ideas before halfway into the semester and found that it's difficult to break up the routines that students get into. In addition to my classroom moodle webpage, I would like to try resources like wiffitti as an introduction to my class with students posting their initial thoughts, questions and expectations of the class.
There are a few roadblocks that I can see coming my way when I begin using these technologies in my class. The first one is that I can see some students complaining that they don't have access to a computer or internet and can't get those assignments done for me. To help them out, I will help them find a time and place that works for them when they have access to a computer at school. We have computers available before and after school for students and I will probably have a computer that can be available for students to work on at times during class. Hopefully this will solve the problem of computer access. Another potential roadblock is that some students like to fight change
. Even though traditional classes and curriculum can be boring to students, they are used to it and may not want to change to using more technology even if it is a change for the better. To overcome this problem, I know that I just need to be patient and diligent in demonstrating the importance of using technology in my classroom. I also need to be aware of the reasoning behind my purpose of using each technology piece in my classes. High school students are very aware and will know if I am simply using technology for the purpose of using technology and I need to have purpose behind my uses.
There are several ways that I will be able to tell whether or not my technology plan is successful. The first indicator will be whether or not students are engaged and see the purpose behind what I am doing. This will be fairly easy for me to see because high school students will be brutally honest in their feelings of what we are doing in class. There are other resources on the internet that I would like to take advantage as well to help me out with this process. Online polling websites such as zoomerang and survey monkey would be a tool that not only could help me recieve student feedback, but would be a good use of technology and save me the time of compilling data as well. I feel that I develop a strong enough relationship with my students that they aren't afraid to tell me how they feel about something and whether or not it is working for them. At the same time, I know that I probably won't get all of my students on board feeling that using technology in my classroom is the best thing since sliced bread, but my hope is that the majority of my students appreciate it and see the benefits. Another way I can tell whether or not my implimentation is successful is by the amount of time it takes me to manage and use the technologies in my classroom. One way that online webtools can save me time is by doing some of my classroom assessments online. I know that moodle has a lot of student assessment tools that I would like to take advantage of such as online tests and quizzes and student self assessments on projects. I am looking forward to seeing the potential that these tools offer.
Are these things saving me time, or creating additional work for me as the teacher? I am planning on it taking a while before it saves me time, but hopefully after the first semester of my school year I will be able to see whether or not a classroom moodle page and other technology pieces are adding to my classes in a positive way. Overall, I am really excited to get starting in implimenting new technologies in my classroom and see how it impacts my classes and students.

Wednesday Reflection
I am also seeing how easy all of these tools are to use. I have stayed away from a lot of these technologies just because I thought it would be overwhelming to use, but I am encouraged with how simple the tools we are using have been to learn.
New technologies in MY classroom
embedded youtube videos w/discussion forums
student vodcasts for projects.
Another cool tool I want to use is the wiffitti website so that students can text questions or comments that apply to our class topics

Before beginning my implimentation of web 2.0 tools, I need to be thinking about a number of constraints and impacts that they will have in my classroom. First if all, I need to make sure that all of my students will have access to the resources that they need to be successful in using web 2.0 tools. If students don’t have computers with internet access at their home, they will be able to accomplish any required tasks on school computers before and after school. The second thing to consider is the relevance that these internet tools will have to the concepts that I already teach in my class. Am I using web 2.0 to enhance learning, or am I just using these tools as an excuse to use technology?
My intentions are to use technology to enhance the learning of my curriculum and the concepts that I teach. Most students are using technology in every aspect of their lives. Their cell phones are with them at all times and they spend more time on the computer than watching tv. If I can incorporate these same technologies into my teaching, not only will my life be much easier, but my students will see educational uses for the technologies that they already use every day.
Because the internet holds a vast amount of information, students and their teacher need to be on the same pages as to what is acceptable internet usage. Our school district has its own policy that explains acceptable internet usage and my class follows that policy along with guidelines specific to my class.
There are a few different reasons why I am planning on implementing new technologies in my classroom. The first reason is that it gets students excited about learning. If they are using the same technologies used in the classroom that they use on their own, it is easier for school to be interesting and exciting. My second reason for implimenting internet tools into my classroom is that I am hoping that once I have everything set up, my life as a teacher will be easier. My hope is that students will have a one stop shop for the resources my students need. With this technology in my classroom, I am hoping that my class will be a more interactive place for my students where they can collaborate with eachother. I am also hoping that this will help with organization for my student’s work.
I am planning on implimenting these tool next school year beginning with a classroom moodle page. I know that it will take some time for me to work out the bugs and determine what will work best, but I plan on using my students and other teachers to help me determine how effective my implimentations are and any changes that will help me out.

The best way that we as teachers can help engage our students is to seek out teaching methods that use the same technology that they use on a daily basis. It has become my goal for this next year to slowly impliment new ways of teaching my curriculum that plays towards the technological strengths of my students.
One thing I am struggling with is trying to decide what the right amount of new technologies will be for me to add to my classroom that won't be too much for my students or myself. The new one I created today that I am still undecided about is a wiki page. Check it out at this link: WIKIWIKI

Reflection #1
3. Right now I am still most interested in setting up a moodle page for my class. I see this as a very useful tool that will help my students and I in the classes I teach. I'm also interested in the wordle tool and how I could use that in my classes to see what students are doing well with and where they could still use some help.
4. I am looking forward to learning the ins and outs of each of the webtools in this class and how they can help my teaching.
